As a busy, working woman, it’s easy to let important tasks like organizing your home inventory fall to the bottom of your to-do list. However, keeping an up-to-date home inventory list is not just a good idea—it’s an essential tool for protecting your family’s personal property in case of a loss. Whether dealing with a natural disaster, theft, or simply updating your insurance policy, a well-organized inventory provides peace of mind when needed.

We learned this firsthand when we built our first home on the Gulf Coast in Alabama. With hurricanes and storms frequently threatening the area, we quickly realized the importance of maintaining a detailed inventory for insurance purposes.

Now, it’s part of our regular maintenance routine to conduct an annual review of our household items, and I’m here to help you do the same with our free home inventory template.

Why a Home Inventory is Important

Creating a detailed inventory helps you:

  • Track your belongings: Understand what you own and its value.
  • Simplify insurance claims: Provide accurate information to your insurance company.
  • Stay prepared: In case of a natural disaster or theft, you’ll have everything documented.
  • Avoid disputes: An inventory checklist template can help streamline communication with your insurance agent.

With our printable inventory sheets, you’ll have an efficient way to organize your belongings and protect your family.

How to Create a Home Inventory

1. Start with a Home Inventory Checklist

Download our free home inventory template from the Resource Library. We offer two versions:

  • Simple Inventory Sheet: Perfect for quick overviews, with columns for item name, description, model numbers, and estimated value.
  • Detailed Inventory Sheet: Includes space for serial numbers, purchase dates, and more, ensuring a complete record.

Both are available in PDF format and are designed to be printer-friendly. Yes, I designed a color version and a black-and-white printer-friendly version!

2. Walk Through Your Home

The first step is to conduct a room-by-room walkthrough. Use your smartphone to record a digital home inventory video. Include every corner of each room, showing:

  • Major items like furniture, electronics, and artwork.
  • Household items such as cookware, linens, and décor.
  • Garage tools and expensive outdoor furniture.

A video walkthrough provides visual proof for your insurance company, supplementing your written list.

3. Document Key Details

For each item, fill out the home inventory spreadsheet with the following information:

  • Item name and description.
  • Manufacturer, make and model.
  • Serial number (for electronics and appliances).
  • Purchase date and original price.
  • Estimated current value.

Be as specific as possible—this will help your insurance agent accurately assess your claim if needed.

What to Include in Your Inventory

To make your inventory process more manageable, here’s a great way to organize it:

  • Electronics: TVs, laptops, cameras, gaming consoles (including model and serial numbers).
  • Appliances: Refrigerators, washers, dryers, and microwaves.
  • Jewelry: Include wedding rings, appraisals, and receipts.
  • Furniture: Sofas, tables, and beds.
  • Tools: Power tools, lawnmowers, and other garage equipment.
  • Outdoor Items: Patio furniture, grills, and garden décor.
  • Personal Property: Clothing, handbags, shoes, and accessories.

Pro Tips for a Complete Inventory

  1. Save Receipts: Keep receipts for major items in a folder or attach them to your printable inventory sheet.
  2. Include Appraisals: Store appraisals with your list for valuable jewelry or artwork.
  3. Update Annually: Set a reminder at the beginning of the new year to review and update your inventory.

  • Safety Deposit Box: Keep a hard copy in a safety deposit box at your bank.
  • Secure Folder: Store in a fireproof safe with your insurance policy documents.
